Virginia Democrats choose Creigh Deeds to be our candidate for Governor of Virginia by a landslide 49.17%     Terry McAuliffe and Brian Moran, who ran against Deeds for the nomination, appeared with Deeds and Governor Tim Kaine on the morning after the primary vote in a show of party unity as Deeds begins his race against Republican Robert McDonnell.

Deeds was narrowly defeated by McDonnell in the 2005 election for Attorney General, but it's 2009 now and Virginia is a different state, so lets get going Dems! This is going to be exciting.

Jody Wagner was also chosen by a landslide of more than 3 to 1 to be our candidate for Lt. Governor.    She was running against Mike Signer.  Jody was state treasurer under Warner and secretary of finance for Governer Kaine.  She is running against incumbent Lt. Governor Bill Bolling.

Steve Shannon was unopposed as candidate for Attorney General.

Senator Northam and Delegate Lewis then spoke about the recent general assembly session and the struggle to balance the budget with the reduced state tax revenue caused by the economic recession.  Large cuts were necessary in order to achieve the balanced budget required by Virginia Law.  The Obama Administration's stimulus funds allowed the state to avoid major cuts to health care, education and law enforcement.  Additional stimulus funding should soon be moving into projects on the Shore and throughout the state as they are approved.

Ralph Northam chats with attendees

They spoke with optimism and excitement of the development of broadband internet on the Eastern Shore and of the selection of NASA Wallops Island as the base of launches for Orbital Science's rockets.

In response to questions from local radio show host Melody Scalley about offshore oil drilling, both Lewis and Northam strongly declared their opposition to drilling, citing it's potential for environmental and aquaculture industry disruption as well as the problems that it would cause for NASA operations and expansion.

Lewis also gave a spirited defense of the American public school system in response to Ms. Scalley's support of school vouchers.
